This seminar class aims to prepare students for success in acquiring English. Students will learn about the culture of the English classroom and practice study skills for learning vocabulary, self-correction in writing and speaking as well as a number of self-study methods.

The aim of this course is to develop students’ listening and speaking abilities, focusing on English necessary for daily activities. This course puts special emphasis on English for travel and tourism. Students in the course participate in an extensive speaking program outside of class as well as a speech contest.

This course provides students with basic reading and discussion practice. In class, students read a variety of short texts, focusing on grammar and vocabulary as well as a number of useful reading strategies. Some exercises will help students succeed on TOEIC & TOEFL tests. Students will also spend some time discussing topics of interest in order to reinforce discussion skills. Outside of class, students will participate in an extensive reading program designed to foster their enjoyment of reading and raise their reading fluency.

Academic Writing

This course provides students with extensive practice in academic writing. Students plan, draft, and revise a number of short writing assignments, beginning with expository paragraphs in the first semester, and moving on to longer compositions in the second semester. Students in the course will keep a Writing Portfolio, composed of work done in all language classes.

Students in CALL I-II will practice basic computer skills: PC operation and typing, with a focus on Microsoft Word and Excel software. Students will also practice communicative skills by doing a number of short projects. Practice ALC Net Academy will develop students’ TOEIC skills. Other self-study methods and resources will be discussed in the course.
