The aim of this course is to develop students’ listening and speaking abilities for everyday situations. Special emphasis will be placed on preparing students living and studying at universities in North America and the UK. Topics include cultural orientation, campus life, and study skills.

Special emphasis will be placed on preparing students for their overseas university experience.

This course gives students an opportunity to develop further their reading and discussion skills at intermediate and advanced levels. While reading a variety of text-types, students will focus on grammar, vocabulary, and reading strategies. Students will complete study of the 2000 word list begun in the seminar course Introduction to English Language Studies. In addition, students will learn how to conduct more complex conversations on the topics of their readings, give a short presentation and write a book report. Outside of class, students will participate in an extensive reading program designed to foster the enjoyment of reading and raise reading fluency.

Students will also learn how to use Internet resources and give computer-assisted presentations using Power Point, while also improving their communicative writing and speaking skills.
