Homework for July 19th (Week 14)

Read Chapter 9 in English or in Japanese. We will have a review and a short quiz on the chapter in class.

You will receive a paper with ONE passage from the novel. Make notes and be ready to talk about the passage. See the handout for details. The handout includes all FOUR passages from the novel.

Homework for July 12th

Prepare a complete draft of your essay, including (1) a title, (2) an introduction, (3) a thesis statement, (4) 2 or more body paragraphs, (5) a conclusion and (6) a list of sources.

Type the draft, print it and bring it to class.

Read Chapter 8 in English or in Japanese. We will have a review and a short quiz on the chapter in class.

Read Chapter 5 of The Great Gatsby in English or Japanese.

If your student number ends in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8):

Be ready to explain the plot and main events of Chapter 5, including individual scenes:

  • Gatsby’s meeting with Daisy
  • Gatsby shows Nick and Daisy around his house

Read as much as you can of chapter 5. (Don’t worry if you can’t understand all of the contents.)

Focus on the following scene:

In chapter 5, Nick and Daisy are shown around Gatsby’s house. What does Gatsby want her to see? How does he act? How does his mood change, according to Nick? Discuss Daisy’s comment about Gatsby’s shirts. Why does she cry? (Print / PDF: 65-66; Book: pp. 72-74)

Be ready to explain the plot and main events of Chapter 3, including individual scenes:

  • Nick’s description of Gatsby’s parties during the summer
  • Nick’s attendance at one party: Who does he meet? What happens?
  • Nick’s impressions of his life in New York city. What does he say about New York?
  • How is his relationship with Jordan?

(1) Nick’s first meeting with Gatsby. What is Nick’s impression of Gatsby? Be ready to discuss his description of Gatsby in detail. Also, what do they say to each other? (Print: p. 36 / Book: p. 40)

(2) Nick’s impressions of life in New York City and his relationship with Jordan (Print: pp. 41-43 / Book: pp. 46-48)
