The First World War and Revolution in Russia<\/em><\/strong>
\nIn 1914, a war began in Europe, with England, France and its allies fighting against Germany. Often called the Great War (or World War I), it was a terrible modern war of airplanes, tanks and machine guns. America entered the war in 1917. The war ended in 1918. Millions of soldiers and civilians were dead by the end of the war. In Russia there was a revolution that deposed the Czar and his royal family, and brought a communist government to power under Josef Stalin.<\/p>\n

The Roaring Twenties<\/em><\/strong>
\nSometimes called “The Roaring Twenties” or “The Jazz Age,” the period after the Great War was a time of economic prosperity for many Americans. The decade was a period of excitement, diverse cultural expression, new forms of media and entertainment, and changing morals– brought on by scientific progress, industrialization, and the increasing urbanization of American life.<\/p>\n

The Great Depression<\/em><\/strong>
\nIn 1929, the stock market crash began a global economic depression, with millions out of work, homeless and without hope. Known as the Great Depression, it lasted until the beginning of the Second World War.<\/p>\n

The Spanish Civil War and The Second World War<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Spanish Civil war attracted defenders of socialism and communism against the dictator Franco. In 1939, a new European war began after the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazism in Germany and Fascism in Italy under Benedito Mussolini.
