Often called the Great War (or World War I), it was a terrible modern war of airplanes, tanks and machine guns. America entered the war in 1917. The war ended in 1918. Millions of soldiers and civilians were dead by the end of the war. The decade was a period of excitement, diverse cultural expression, new forms of media and entertainment, and changing morals&#8211; brought on by scientific progress, industrialization, and the increasing urbanization of American life.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Great Depression<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nIn 1929, the stock market crash began a global economic depression, with millions out of work, homeless and without hope. In 1939, a new European war began after the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazism in Germany and Fascism in Italy under Benedito Mussolini.
