I graduated from Oberlin College, USA, majoring in linguistics, and taught English language in China and Japan. Later I studied development and social change at Nagoya University, earning a Ph.D. for anthropological research on sanitation promotion in Bangladesh. I taught graduate students at Nagoya University and served with an NGO supporting community health workers in Asia before joining Chukyo University in 2014.
