ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

MISSION
The mission of the Department of British and American Cultural Studies is to provide Chukyo undergraduate students with a strong foundation in the following areas:

¥ practical oral communication in English
¥ computer literacy
¥ critical thinking and discussion skills
¥ academic writing and research methods
¥ theory and practice of linguistic, literary, and cultural study
¥ knowledge of the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world

The Department places a high priority on developing students' proficiency in oral communication, fostering independent study, and preparing students for the challenges of the global Information age. Therefore, proficiency in English as a communicative tool and the use of the computer for self-study, collaboration, and research are important goals throughout their four years of study.

COURSE OFFERINGS
Our courses are offered in both Japanese and English, and deal with a wide variety of cultures in the English-speaking world and a wide variety of cultural forms (literature, linguistics, film, popular culture, and music). Offerings include British Social History; British, American, and Canadian Literature; English Linguistics; Film; and Contemporary Pop Culture. In addition, students follow a seminar course over three of their four-year program.

SEMINARS
The seminar is a specialized course of intensive, individualized study directed by the seminar instructor, leading to the completion of a research project. In the Department of British and American Cultural Studies, students begin seminars in the second year, after a short period of introductory study with each of the Department's seminar instructors. In the third year, students pursue their research. In the fourth, they complete a graduation thesis, or rombun. They may do so in either English or Japanese.

OVERSEAS STUDY
Overseas study is also an option. The International Center at Chukyo University provides students with the opportunity to attend courses abroad and earn credits from our partner institutions:

¥ California State University, Chico (U.S.A.)
¥ University of Nottingham (U.K.)
¥ University of Sunderland (U.K.)
¥ Massey University (N.Z.)
