The Eye of the Heron (1978) における 2 つの集団、 The Beginning Place (1980) における 2 つの世界、あるいは "Buffalo Gals, Won't You Come Out Tonight" (1987) における 人間と動物の世界との関係など、 どれをみても単一の視点ではなく、 複眼でとらえようとする作者の姿勢を強く 感じる。
Other than the continuing voice of feminism, scholarship about Le Guin has gone through several critical fads. The earliest criticism looked at two major influences on her work, Taoism and Jungian psychology. Academics mined Le Guin's science fiction and fantasy for every aspect of both.
I want to tell my own stories. In telling some of them I certainly do use certain ideas and images that come from the great literature of Western Native America. I also use ideas and images that come from China - I have been using (exploiting, appropriating?) Lao Tzu for years as the very basis of my invention and conceptions of the world. Is this equally reprehensible?
Thirty spokes / meet in the hub. / Where the wheel isn't / is where it's useful. Hollowed out, / clay makes a pot. / Where the pot's not / is where it's useful. Cut doors and windows / to make a room. / Where the room isn't, / there's room for you. So the profit in what is / is in the use of what isn't. (Wizard 22)とか、 "Only what is mortal bears life" (The Farthest Shore (1972 以下 Shore と略す) 151) とか、 "To see a candle's light one must take it into a dark place."
Our civilization is now so intensely yang that any imagination of bettering its injustices or eluding its self-destructiveness must involve a reversal. ... To attain the constant, to end in order, we must return, go round, go inward, go yinward. What would a yin utopia be? It would be dark, wet, obscure, weak, yielding, passive, participatory, circular, cyclical, peaceful, nurturant, retreating, contracting, and cold. The Language of the Night
So a wise leader might say: I practice inaction, and the people look after themselves. I love to be quiet, and the people themselves find justice. I don't do business, and people prosper on their own. I don't have wants, and the people themselves are uncut wood. (Le Guin 版 57 章 'Being simple' 75) (故聖人云、 我無為而民自化、 我好靜而民自正、 我無事而民自富、 我無欲而民自樸)この 57 章は、 「何かをすることのほうが、 しないでいることよりずっと簡単なのだ」 とアレンに言うゲドが、 さらに "But if there were a king over us all again, ... and I were that mage, I would say to him: My lord, do nothing because it is righteous, or praiseworthy, or noble, to do so; do nothing because it seems good to do so; do only that which you must do, and which you cannot do in any other way."
Brim-full the bowl, / it'll spill over. / Keep sharpening the blade, / you'll soon blunt it. Nobody can protect / a house full of good and jade. Wealth, status, pride, are their own ruin. / To do good, work well, and lie low / is the way of the blessing. He goes home."
The Way bears one. / The one bears two. / The two bear three. / The three bear the ten thousand things. / The ten thousand things / carry the yin on their shoulders / and hold in their arms the yang, / whose interplay of energy / makes harmony.
The first Tao Te Ching I ever saw was the Paul Carus edition of 1898, ... It was a venerable object of mystery, which I soon investigated, and found more fascinating inside than out. The book was my father's; he read in it often. ... He said he was marking which chapters he'd like to have read at his funeral. We did read those chapters at his memorial service. I have the book. ... I'd like to have read at my funeral. "I started in my twenties with a few chapters."(107)と書いている。
So the unwanting soul / sees what's hidden, / and the ever-wanting soul / sees only what it wants. また、 Feng and English は妙を mystery 徼を manifestation と訳しているのに対し、 ル・グウィンは、 what's hidden と only what it wants と、 意味にふみこんで訳している。
He who desireless is found / The spiritual of the world will sound. / But he who by desire is bound / Sees the mere shell of things around. (Carus 30)
Truly, 'Only he that rids himself forever of desire can see the Secret Essences'; / He that has never rid himself of desire can see only the Outcomes. (Waley141)
Ever desireless, one can see the mystery. / Ever desiring, one can see the manifestation. (Feng and English)5
The valley spirit never dies. / Call it the mystery, the woman. (Le Guin 9)
The valley sprit not expires, / Mysterious woman 'tis called by the sires. (Carus 37)
The Valley Spirit never dies. / It is named the Mysterious Female. (Waley 149)
The valley spirit never dies; / It is the woman, primal mother. (Feng and English)
So they say: "The Way is great, / heaven is great, / earth is great, / and humankind is great; / four greatness in the world, / and humanity is one of them." (Le Guin 35)Carus は、 脚注で、 この部分は "seems to be a gloss which slipped into the text." (68)と述べているが、 ル・グウィンはさらに押し進め、 "I think a Confucian copyist slipped the king in."と推測し、 "The king garbles the sense of the poem and goes against the spirit of the book. I dethroned him."
The saying goes: / 'Reason is great, heaven is great, earth is great, and royalty also is great. [There are four things in the world that are great, and royalty is one of them.] (Carus 68)
Thus just as Tao has 'this greatness' and as earth has it and as heaven has it, so may the ruler also have it. Thus 'within the realm there are four portion of greatness', and one belongs to the king. (Waley 174)
Therefore, "Tao is great; / Heaven is great; / Earth is great; / The king is also great." / These are the four great powers of the universe, And the king is one of them. (Feng and English)
Be completely empty. / Be perfectly serene. / The ten thousand things arise together; / in their arising is their return. / Now they flower, and flowering / sink homeward / returning to the root. ゲドに、 "You did not come to me, but I to you."
The return to the root / is peace. / Peace: to accept what must be, / to know what endures. / In that knowledge is wisdom. / Without it, ruin, disorder.
To know what endures / is to be openhearted, / magnanimous,/ regal, / blessed, / following the Tao, / the way that endures forever. / The body comes to its ending, / but there is nothing to fear.
